Investment casting for medical technology with SBV Stahltechnik

Medical technology systems place particularly high demands on every component. The components used must not only fit exactly but also be cleanable, sterilizable, and reliably usable over the long term.

The investment casting process is often the only economically and technically viable solution for such requirements. SBV Stahltechnik supports you with precise planning, high-quality production, and reliable coordination up to the delivery of ready-to-install components.

What makes investment casting so valuable for medical technology?

Components for medical devices or systems often cannot be produced economically by milling or welding. As soon as interiors, hollow bodies, curves without parting lines, or smooth transitions are needed, many traditional processes reach their limits. The investment casting process solves these challenges and also offers significant advantages for medical technology:

  • Stainless steel parts with a smooth surface meet the hygienic requirements of many medical products
  • The high repeatability in the investment casting process, combined with the mechanical machining of functional areas, guarantees process-stable and dimensionally accurate components
  • Stainless steel in specific grades (for example 1.4404 or 1.4435) ensures chemical resistance and biocompatibility

Typical investment casting parts in medical technology

Components for medical devices or systems often cannot be produced economically by milling or welding. This is how a project with SBV Stahltechnik proceeds

We accompany each investment casting project from the first contact to the final delivery. Our goal is an accurate, economically sensible solution that seamlessly integrates into your processes. The process is clearly structured and coordinated by a fixed contact person.

Inquiry and initial review

You send us a drawing and 3D data, ideally with material preference, quantity, and information about the application area. We check the technical feasibility and provide an initial assessment.

Consultation and offer phase

We clarify open questions, advise on casting and manufacturing design, and, if necessary, select the appropriate stainless steel grade with you. You then receive a non-binding offer with delivery time, tool costs, and project planning.

Tool construction and prototype production

After commissioning, a final simulation is carried out to ensure an optimal casting process. We create the wax tool and produce initial samples for dimensional inspection, functional evaluation, and approval.

Series release and production

After your approval, we start series production. The components are cast, mechanically processed and/or heat-treated as needed, and packed ready for shipment after final inspection.

Delivery as required

We deliver the finished investment cast parts on call, in fixed lot sizes, or as a complete batch. Interim storage in Germany is possible upon request.

Special requirements in medical technology? We offer the right solutions.

Smooth, sterile, and precise

The smooth casting skin through the ceramic shell reduces dead spaces and increases accuracy. If necessary, we also offer additional steps such as vibratory finishing or polishing.

Repeatability in series

Dimensional accuracy is crucial for medical technology assemblies. Investment casting with SBV Stahltechnik meets your requirements and tolerances through precise investment casting and the right process like milling or turning in the subsequent work step. This ensures reliable series production and assembly processes.

Stainless steels with certified quality

We process only stainless steels approved for medical technology applications. Material selection is based on temperature resistance, media contact, and chemical resistance. Each melt is checked for the correct composition using spectral analysis before casting.

Short paths, clear communication

Despite manufacturing in our affiliated plants in Asia, SBV Stahltechnik remains your main contact in Germany. We ensure smooth communication, quick response times, and transparent project execution.

When is investment casting the right choice for medical technology components?

Investment casting is ideal when:

  • complex geometries cannot be realized with conventional methods or are not economically viable
  • the highest dimensional accuracy is required with consistent quality
  • surface requirements necessitate a smooth casting skin
  • stainless steels with specific chemical resistance are needed
  • economic small series are needed without compromising precision

SBV Stahltechnik also assists you in replacing existing welded constructions or milled parts with cast parts. This saves time, reduces costs, and often improves the functionality of the final product.

Why WE are the right partner for medical technology investment casting parts

Investment casting is not just investment casting. Especially in medical technology, details determine the success of a project. We offer the technical depth, organizational experience, and infrastructure to reliably implement sophisticated projects.

  • Associated plants in Asia for cost-effective production of TOP parts. Each location has over 100 CNC machining centers and more than 20,000 square meters of production space available.
  • Technical consultation on geometry, material selection, and design suitable for casting. With us, you speak directly with experts.
  • Certified processes according to IATF 16949, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 50001. We meet the highest standards for quality, environment, and occupational safety.
  • Flexible project management with intermediate storage in Germany and on-demand delivery.
  • Design and prototyping even for small series, for example, through rapid prototyping using 3D printing of wax models.
  • Own stainless steel hardening facility in Germany. This allows material properties to be specifically adjusted and processing times to be shortened.
