Hardening shop for stainless steel: Durability that lasts
Components made of stainless steel are only truly reliable if they retain their properties over many years. This is where our hardening shop comes into play. With modern methods, we ensure that stainless steel parts become more resistant, edge layers are optimally hardened, and your components do not deform or wear out even under heavy loads.
Hardening shop: Where heat creates the foundation for durability
A hardening shop is a place where ordinary components become high-performance parts. Through targeted heat treatment, we alter the properties of metals so that they become harder, more resilient, and more durable. It is not only about hardness in the traditional sense, but also about shape stability, low-wear surfaces, and longer service life in application.
Hardening makes the decisive difference when components need to function reliably in harsh environments. Without heat treatment, many parts lose their resistance too quickly. With a hardening shop like SBV’s, they become secure system components that can withstand the stresses.
How does the hardening of stainless steel with SBV Steel Technology work?
Hardening is a combination of heating, holding, and cooling under precisely defined conditions. Depending on the method, we alter the microstructure in the material so that it becomes harder and more wear-resistant without losing its corrosion resistance.
Preparation
The components are first cleaned to remove contaminants such as oils, greases, or oxides. This ensures that the surface is free for the subsequent gas reaction.
Heating
The workpieces are evenly brought to a temperature below 500 °C in a system. This low process heat prevents structural transformations or distortions and creates the conditions for the subsequent reaction.
Process atmosphere
A controlled gas mixture is introduced into the furnace. This contains various activated carbon-containing components that directly interact with the metal surface.
Diffusion into the edge layer
Under the chosen conditions, the carbon atoms migrate into the austenitic lattice of the stainless steel. They settle into interstitial positions without destroying the basic structure. This creates an enriched edge layer, the depth of which can be adjusted to around 30 µm depending on process control.
Build-up of compressive residual stresses
The incorporation of carbon creates tensions in the metal lattice. These tensions lead to a significant increase in surface hardness while the internal structure remains unchanged.
End of process and cooling
After a specified treatment time, the gas supply is stopped, and the component is slowly cooled to room temperature. It can then be removed from the system and further processed or cleaned if necessary.
At SBV, we use a method specially developed by us for stainless steel. This maintains the corrosion resistance.

Stainless steel grades we process in our hardening shop
Not all stainless steels behave the same during hardening. Different grades have their own properties that we specifically take into account. In our hardening shop, we process the following materials, among others:
- 1.4308 (V2A): The classic among stainless steels, versatile and corrosion-resistant. Suitable for many applications in mechanical engineering and the food industry.
- 1.4404 (V4A): Especially resistant to aggressive media such as acids or chlorides. Frequently used in chemical and process engineering, as well as in the maritime environment.
- 1.4408: A cast variant with high strength, used in pumps, valves, and fittings.
- 1.4848: Heat-resistant stainless steel for applications with high temperatures, such as in energy or furnace technology.
We select the appropriate grade together with you, tailored to the medium, temperature range, and mechanical load. This ensures that your components are not only hardened but also optimally suited for the intended use.
Advantages of our hardening shop
- The component does not heat above 500 °C, thus no heat distortions occur.
- Already finished parts can be treated and do not change.
- All sharp edges and geometries remain exactly preserved.
- The edge layer is only about 30 µm deep, keeping the core tough.
- Surface hardness increases to over 900 HV.
- No chromium carbides or graphite form, so corrosion resistance remains completely intact.
- As it is a diffusion process, there is no coating that could flake off or crack.
- The treatment acts uniformly, regardless of the shape or size of the components.
Application areas for stainless steel hardening
The hardening shop is a crucial factor for many industries. Wherever components are used continuously or operate in safety-critical areas, reliable heat treatment is indispensable. Stainless steel hardening ensures that parts do not only function once but continue to work reliably, even under the toughest conditions.
Automotive and two-wheel technology
Components in the drivetrain that retain their properties even with high mileage.
Mechanical engineering
Gears, bearing surfaces, and valves that withstand millions of cycles.
Food industry
Stainless steel components that must not rust when in contact with water or aggressive cleaning agents.
Hydraulics and pneumatics
Parts that are exposed to high pressures and must remain corrosion-resistant.
Medical technology
