How does the investment casting process work?
We use a multi-step process to manufacture investment casting parts from stainless steel, steel, or aluminum. The starting point is a wax model, which we enclose with a ceramic mold. We pour the metal into this mold. The main steps:
Produce wax model & assemble wax clusters
A precise wax model of the component is produced using a wax tool or 3D printing, then several wax models are assembled into a wax cluster
Manufacture and fire ceramic shells
The wax clusters are dipped in liquid slurry in several steps and then sanded. This creates 5-8 layers of ceramics with different coarse sands for flawless surfaces on the cast part and sufficient stability for the stress during casting. The dried ceramic mold is heated in an autoclave using steam, melting out the wax. Then the shell is fired at >1000 °C before casting.
Cast & demold components
During casting, liquid metal is poured into the fired and still >1000°C hot ceramic mold, after solidification and cooling, the ceramic is destroyed and separated from the casting cluster by vibration.
Separate casting cluster & process components
The individual components are separated from the casting clusters and the sprues are ground. Then the components are blasted, annealed, and pickled. If required, mechanical processing and refinement by coating or heat treatment take place now.
